Learn & Grow

Jewish living begins with Jewish learning!

At Kol Ami, learning is for everyone – kids, teens, and adults alike. Whether you’re new to Judaism or a lifelong learner, you’ll find thought-provoking, welcoming, and relevant programs that meet you where you are.

Kol Ami hosts inspiring guest speakers, adult learning opportunities, interfaith events, and social action initiatives throughout the year. Engage your mind and heart as we explore Jewish values in today’s world.

Lifelong Jewish Learning

Talmud Torah k’neged kulam – Jewish learning is equal to all other mitzvot.

Kol Ami is a community that learns together. Our adult education programs are open to all and span a wide range of topics – from Torah and Talmud to Jewish thought, history, and current issues.

Highlights include:

  • Shabbat Torah Study – Grab breakfast and dive into Torah with Rabbi Lori, guest teachers, and fellow learners.
  • Talmud with Rabbi Jesse Paikin – Serious study in a casual Zoom setting. No experience needed!
  • Classes & Guest Speakers – Covering everything from Israel to Indigenous issues.
  • YorkU@KolAmi Series – University-level insights, open to all.
  • Online Book Club – Great books and great conversations.
  • Jack Cahan Memorial Lecture – Honouring Jewish military history each Remembrance Day.

And that’s just the beginning.

Check our calendar or contact the office for details on upcoming learning opportunities!

Torah Study

Start your Shabbat with soul food and good company! Join us at 9:00 am for breakfast, followed by a lively hour of learning with Rabbi Lori Cohen, guest teachers, or lay leaders – either in person or on Zoom.

We usually explore the weekly Torah portion, but sometimes dive into other Jewish texts or timely topics. No experience or Hebrew knowledge needed – just curiosity and an open mind. In July and August, we blend study into our morning Shabbat service.

Come be part of our warm, thoughtful learning community!

[REGISTER HERE]

Ever wonder how Jewish traditions came to be? Join Rabbi Jesse Paikin weekly on Zoom as we explore the Talmud and other rabbinic texts that have shaped Jewish life across time and place. Together, we unpack ancient debates, discover how Jewish law (Halakha) evolved, and reflect on what it all means today.

Classes blend text study, group discussion, and intro-level lectures. All texts are in English and original languages – no prior experience needed. Ideal for beginner to intermediate learners. Miss a class? Recordings are available.

About Rabbi Jesse Paikin

Rabbi Paikin, Executive Director at Base (Moishe House), has taught across North America. A proud Kol Ami alum, he grew up in our community, became Bar Mitzvah and Confirmed here, and led in TAKAY, our youth group.
